Helpful Tips
1. Avoid scratches when washing or cleaning
Scratches are a big enemy to your car's finish. Avoiding scratches is the secret
to keeping your car looking good. Dirt and grime, rubbed in while washing or
drying, will act like sandpaper and dull your car's paint and will also remove
some of the paint. There is one basic rule which will guide you whenever you
touch the surface of your automobile:
Anything that comes in contact with your car's finish should be soft, always
clean and free of dirt.
2. Protect your car's paint and other surfaces from
the elements.
Store your car in a garage or covered area. The use of a car cover is highly
recommended whether your car is in a garage or exposed to the weather. A car
that is constantly exposed to sunlight and other environmental hazards will
deteriorate quicker and require significantly more cosmetic maintenance.
3. Keep a good coat of wax or paint sealant on the painted
surfaces.
In addition to providing gloss and depth, wax will also protect your car from
the elements, including sunlight, Acid rain and many other circumstances that
you will encounter, from bug carcasses to bird droppings.
4. Inspect your car's finish frequently.
Regular inspections of your cars surface is a good habit to get into. Look it
over and note its condition, keeping in mind its recent history and what you
anticipate will happen in the future. Make sure your paint is free of any element
that can cause harm. if you have a bird dropping or similar unwanted threat
on your paints surface, remove it before driving in extreme heat. This will
force the unwanted element deeper into the surface of the paint. Very hard to
remove later.
5. Detailing your car Often.
Washing your car once a month is reasonable. Once every two weeks is better
and necessary if the car is subject to harsh weather conditions. Washing and
waxing your vehicle once a week is optimal and will lead to a higher resale
value. If at all possible let a professional wash and detail your vehicle at
least once a month, to protect it further from any serious damage that may occur
from the weather and improper maintenance. The clear coat is similar to your
facial skin, needs proper care and maintenance to have it looking its best, only
one thing, your face sheds it's skin often were your vehicles clear coat does
not. Having your vehicle waxed often protects it, having your vehicle polished
removes layers that cannot be replaced.
A good polishing after damage has occurred is highly recommended, but just as important, it is necessary to maintain those good looks and protection with proper care and maintenance.
6. Pressure washing.
We all like to get things done quickly, but knowing what to use to get the job done is very important. A pressure washer is a tool that allows you to get stubborn elements off a particular surface. Remember they call it a PRESSURE washer for a reason. A pressure washer is commonly used to do the undercarriage of a vehicle rather than pre-soaking a vehicle. The pressure may damage a vehicles surface if used incorrectly. I recommend never using a pressure washer to pre-soak or rinse your vehicle. If your paint is older it becomes more delicate and should be treated as such. Any imperfections on the paint surface can be stripped away from a pressure washer. Use caution if you bring your vehicle for detailing and a pressure washer is used inappropriately.
